US embargo of Cuba to stay in force after Castro quits

It would betray my conscience to take up a responsibility that requires mobility and total commitment that I am not in physical condition to offer."

Western leaders responded by calling for democratic reforms in Cuba but John Negroponte, the deputy US Secretary of State, confirmed that the US would not be lifting its embargo, saying: "I can’t imagine that happening anytime soon."

Barack Obama, the Democratic presidential hopeful, later issued a statement however saying that the US should consider easing the trade embargo if progress was made.

"If the Cuban leadership begins opening Cuba to meaningful democratic change, the United States must be prepared to begin taking steps to normalise relations and to ease the embargo of the last five decades," he said.

Textile designer ends up £5,197 better off after foreign cheque ...

As a self-employed textile designer of 17 years standing, I also act as agent for other designers from whom I take a sales percentage. For the past decade I have been selling to the US market.

Over four months after I had paid in an $8,400 cheque, my NatWest branch manager informed me that it had bounced. At no point had the bank called me to say there was a problem.

By then the company the cheque came from had halted all payables. In fact I paid another cheque after it issued the first one and this one cleared. The bank is not reimbursing the money but I feel it should.

LW, Sheffield.

When you paid in the cheque originally, a cashier overlooked the fact that it was a foreign cheque and put it through the usual sterling clearing. This had happened before but that time the mistake had been spotted and quickly corrected.

Web companies discover the perils of putting privacy before profits.

A few months ago, I shopped around for a Web site to help keep track of my spending habits. I was looking for a service that would charge me nothing yet work flawlessly, protect my privacy, and make me feel good about myself—a tall order, I'll admit. I settled on a little start-up called Wesabe, mostly because the founders seemed so committed to, well … to being cool dudes. The company has a detailed and very encouraging policy on privacy and data ownership and has recruited privacy-obsessed Alpha Geeks like Cory Doctorow and Clay Shirky to serve on its advisory board. In its frequently asked questions, Wesabe comes across as positively saintly: They won't sell ads because ads encourage you to spend, they plan on making money by helping people reach their financial goals, and their security measures are at least as impressive as those used by your credit card company.

Marc Hershman, 1942-2008: Ocean policy pioneer mentored many

He really liked to know what was going on in our lives; that was his time he knew he could get caught up for the week and be together," said his daughter, Carla.

He often had a kind word for young faculty members and graduate students.

Hershman "was always reassuring them that they could do it," said Tom Leschine, director of the UW School of Marine Affairs. "He was just outstanding with students."

For many, he was that person who came along at just the right time in their lives, offering just the right words of encouragement and inspiration.

After serving on the U.S. Commission on Ocean Policy from 2001 to 2004, Hershman urged state leaders to develop their own policy as matters of climate change, coastal dead zones and shrinking fish stocks were making headline news.

RBA lifts rates by .25 percent and it will hurt, says Rudd

PRIME Minister Kevin Rudd says the latest rise in official interest rates will be a double blow for family budgets still struggling with last month's increase.

"Today's news is a double blow for the family budget," he told reporters in Canberra.

"Two rate rises will hurt working families."

Homebuyers will have to find an extra $50 a month for the average mortgage after the Reserve Bank of Australia raised its official cash rate by a quarter of a percentage point, to 7.25 per cent, following today's monthly central bank board meeting.

The move to the highest level in 12 years was widely tipped by economists, given the RBA's concern about a worsening inflation outlook.

Last month, the RBA raised rates by a quarter of a percentage point as well.

How much monthly mortgage repayments will increase after today's interest rate rise, assuming a new standard variable mortgage rate of 9.20 per cent on a 25-year loan.

Narodny Rock and the G7's Men of Action

Barely three months later in Sept. 2007, however, the global banking crisis had spread onto Britain's high streets, creating the first open "banking run" in more than 130 years at Northern Rock - one of the nation's top five mortgage lenders.

Darling has clearly been hard at work ever since...fixing everything that let Northern Rock go from £12.29 per share to £0.52 on the stock market - a full 95% slump - as it soaked up £26 billion ($50.4bn) in emergency loans from the Bank of England.

The G7's Men of Action

"What you can do at an international level, I believe, is make sure we have better early warning systems," he told CNBC in a relaxed chat last week after the G-7 summit in Tokyo.

"[We can] make sure that, er, when it comes to, er, off-balance sheet arrangements, or when it comes to the way that credit reference...er, credit rating agencies behave, then there does need to be international co-operation.

Donald Newell, retired firefighter, dies at 86

After serving in the US Army Air Corps during World War II, he spent 37 years as a firefighter out of Orient Heights in East Boston for Ladder 21 and Engine 56.

Mr. Newell also was commander of the American Legion in Saugus for five years in the late 1980s and early 1990s and was active with Shriners Aleppo Temple Fire Brigade during his retirement.

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Newell leaves a son, Robert of Danvers; three sisters, Beulah Kanarkiewicz of Saugus, Phyllis Leston of Danvers, and Fern Ruble of Woburn; and four grandchildren.

Moyer to lawyers: Fight foreclosure for free

Ohio Supreme Court Chief Justice Thomas Moyer, a Sandusky native, knows home foreclosures are a big problem back home in Erie County and across Ohio.

Moyer is asking the courts and Ohio attorneys to reach out and help as many homeowners as they can.

The chief justice has asked judges who handle foreclosure cases to use mediation to resolve as many cases as possible.

And he's asked Ohio lawyers to volunteer in foreclosure cases to help families who can't otherwise afford a lawyer.

A record number of foreclosure cases in 2007 have helped contribute to the growing workload in the Erie County courts, said the clerk of courts, Barbara Johnson.

A freeze to keep lenders at bay?

Minnesota homeowners facing the loss of their houses could stop foreclosures and make reduced payments for up to one year under a bill that will get its first legislative hearing today.

"It's time for bold, balanced actions," Rep. Jim Davnie, DFL-Minneapolis, said at a news conference Wednesday. "It's time to prevent avoidable foreclosures in Minnesota."

Minnesota's actions are being closely watched elsewhere, as few states have attempted a widespread freeze on foreclosures since the Great Depression.

Foreclosures are expected to reach a record 33,000 in Minnesota this year, up from 20,573 last year, said Sen. Ellen Anderson, DFL-St. Paul. And while Hennepin County is the hardest hit, foreclosure signs are popping up across the state as borrowers succumb to a weakening economy.
