Britons Face Billion-Pound Interest Payback

One in four people is struggling with their debts as Britons collectively face a 93bn annual bill for interest.

At the same time, around three million people have taken out a debt consolidation loan to try to get on top of their borrowings.

Borrowing through credit cards, loans, overdrafts and mortgages has hit almost 1.4 trillion, according to comparison website uSwitch.com.

An estimated 9.5m people had "maxed out" on one form of credit during the past six months, while 38% have had a credit card application rejected, the group claims.

But nearly two-thirds of these failed to close down their existing credit facilities, and instead went on to rack up a further 2,300 of debt on average.

Overall, the research found that the average household has now amassed unsecured debts of 4,281.

Curbing the Chaos in the Garage

At some point, our two-car garage morphed into an all-purpose repository for household junk. Amid the tennis gear, soccer balls and old newspapers, it had room for only one car.

We clearly needed help. So we called in professional garage organizers to clear the clutter.

Garage organizing is big business. Including home workshops -- comprising everything from auto-repair equipment to upright tool chests -- garage gear has become a billion-dollar industry, says Greg Alford, senior partner with Peachtree Consulting Group, an Atlanta-based marketing consulting firm. High-end custom garage-organizing companies have been growing 20%-25% per year, Mr. Alford says. He does, however, expect the growth to flatten a little in 2008, because of the weakening economy.

The typical American garage is growing.

Miller struggles but Marlins beat Red Sox 3-2

You get a little wild, and how soon can you get out of it? It took me obviously way too long today."

Miller pitched three hitless innings. Daniel Barone, the fourth of six Florida pitchers, was the winner and Lee Gardner worked the ninth for the save.

Alexis Gomez's RBI single drove in Paul Hoover in the seventh to put the Marlins ahead to stay against Justin Masterson.

BofA's stake in

If Visa Inc. goes public as planned, Bank of America Corp.'s stake in the company could be worth more than $1 billion, according to a Bear Stearns note released Tuesday.

Visa is owned by the banks that issue its cards, a list that includes Charlotte-based Bank of America and Wachovia Corp. The banks currently value their stake in Visa based on Visa's assets. When Visa's stock trades publicly, the banks will adjust that figure to the market value.

Bear Stearns estimates that Bank of America's stake in Visa will be worth $1.26 billion, if the shares sell for halfway between the proposed range of $37 to $42. Bank of America owns about 11 percent of Visa's Class B stock, behind only JP Morgan Chase & Co., which owns 23 percent. Bear Stearns did not provide a similar estimate for Wachovia, which owns less than 5 percent of those shares.

Democrats duel, then McCain pounces

They young supporters used all kinds of digital methods to urge each other to vote and spreading the message to all others to go out to vote. He won. The "conservatives" were shocked. He employed lots of so nicknamed "boy scouts" for his inner circle, all wide-eyed idealists who vowed to turn Korea upside down, inside out by trying to make changes. The result was miserable. Roh was even abandoned by his own ruling party which itself split into two different parties. His rating went down steadily from overwhelming support of the voting public to a miserable low of less than 20%. The media treated him like dirt. He openly confessed that he felt miserable. With all the good intentions of trying to serve his country for a better future, all the blames were on him instead. His inexperience, his poor handling of the media, his overly frank and open dialogue with the public, and his choice of his cabinet, etc.
