| Getting rid of Downtown's 'menace'
I had to read your Feb. 23 article "Habitat begins Hispanic outreach" twice, because I was in disbelief that this organization would put legal Americans at the end of the line for a home. The idea that this organization wants to extend services to other groups is noble. However, the idea that they contacted other groups in search of justification to include illegal immigrants is appalling. Please put taxpaying, legal Americans first. To do otherwise is a travesty to people who deserve to be first in line. Bobbie Williams Memphis Butt out on missile inquiry, China The United States succeeded in using its defensive missile capabilities to shoot down an American satellite that was falling back to Earth. The concern was for the toxic fuel that was on board the spacecraft, government officials said.
Thinking of spring training, Francoeur’s future
It's a January 2005 Baseball America with top 10 prospects for each NL East team. It's easy to forget how young Fracoeur and McCann are until you read this and realize it was exactly three years ago, and that at the time Francoeur had only 76 at-bats above A-ball and McCann had zero. Think about that. At that time, in January 2005, David Wright had 263 at-bats (and 14 homers) in the majors for the Mets. I use him for context simply because he's someone that obviously everyone on this blog is (quite) familiar with, and because some on the ol' blog sometimes hold Francoeur up against Wright in attempts to point out the former's deficiencies, since Wright is only 13 months older. (As if falling short in most offensive categories when compared to one of the very best young players in the game is somehow terrible for Francoeur.
28 Things Didn't Happen In 2007
Companies began experimenting with building their own SecondLife areas, and thieves and vandals ran amok, too. At the end of 2007, who's still talking about it? Hardly anybody, and the virtual tumbleweeds seem to be increasing as members seem to spending less and less time there -- their initial infatuation wearing thin. Jury's still out though. The site has seen some positive growth, just the not the explosive growth everyone was counting on. Widgets didn't falter Widgets certainly did explode onto the scene in 2007. After Facebook opened up its platform to developers, the applications began pouring in. And then Facebook users started virtual food fights. Sophisticated usage or not, you have to chalk one up for the success of widgets in social networking.
Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales accused of expenses rort
The scandal engulfing Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales has spread, with a former executive claiming Wales improperly used the non-profit organisation's funds for his own lavish recreation. Danny Wool, who was effectively Wales' right-hand man for two years before he left the donor-supported Wikimedia Foundation last year, said Wales had tried to claim the cost of items such as a visit to a massage parlour in Moscow and expensive bottles of wine. The claims come just as Wales' messy break-up with a girlfriend he met via his free online encyclopedia plays out in the public domain. It includes claims Wales broke Wikipedia's own conflict of interest rules by attempting to influence the site's editing process. Wales has denied any wrongdoing. "Jimbeau [Wool's nickname for his former boss] was certainly not frugal in his spending on his endless trips abroad, but when it came to handing in receipts, he could be somewhat careless," Wool wrote in a post on his personal blog.

What is social anxiety disorder (SAD)?
The very normality of social anxiety has meant that SAD is often undiagnosed. The person becomes anxious as he/she anticipates humiliation and embarrassment days or weeks before the dreaded event (anticipatory anxiety). During the event he/she is immediately anxious and extremely uncomfortable throughout. After the event, the person may be plagued by concerns about their performance and how others judged them or thought of them. In this way a vicious circle is created. The person may feel that everyone else is far more competent in public and that he/she is not. Small mistakes may appear much more serious than they really are and the person feels that his/her every move or reaction is noticeable to others. Blushing may in itself be painfully humiliating to the person.
Man gets 22 months in drug case
A third member of a Fort Frances family accused of running a drug distribution operation with the Hells Angels is going to jail. Superior Court Justice Helen Pierce sentenced 35-year-old Dion Godbout on Tuesday to 22 months in jail. He was one of more than two dozen people arrested, including drug ring boss and Thunder Bay Hells Angel member Mario Minier, in January 2006 after a police investigation dubbed Project Husky. Godbout‘s mother Janet Godbout was sentenced in April to five years in jail, while his brother Julian Godbout received 22 months in June. Sister Crystal Godbout, along with Nicholas Bruyere, is on trial this week in Superior Court. Before his trial began in the fall, Dion Godbout pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic cocaine and participating in the activities of a criminal organization.

The time and effort put into telling these stories has been remarkable. Staff photographer Jessica Chou spent countless hours with the four students profiled in this package – even taking trips to join them in places like San Francisco, Boston, Sacramento and Santa Ana. The result, we hope, is a candid and rich visual account of the struggles faced by undocumented students, both individually and collectively, in their quests for a college education. If you have any questions or comments, please e-mail staff photographer Jessica Chou at jchou@media.ucla.edu. .
Stocks struggle higher
The Ambac news dragged on a number of financial stocks and initially pulled down the broader market. But stocks crawled back into positive territory by the late afternoon. Adding to the afternoon malaise was the release of the Federal Reserve's periodic "beige book" reading on the economy, which showed that most of the 12 districts reported a slowdown in economic activity since the beginning of the year. Although some reports will suggest improvement here and there, the current theme in the economy is pretty obvious, said John Merrill, chief investment officer at Tanglewood Capital Management. "We've seen a sudden and extreme downturn in economic activity since December," Merrill said. "Not every report shows that, but taken together, it suggests a pronounced slowdown." "There's not a lot to suggest that we aren't in a recession," he said.
