Britons Face Billion-Pound Interest Payback

One in four people is struggling with their debts as Britons collectively face a 93bn annual bill for interest.

At the same time, around three million people have taken out a debt consolidation loan to try to get on top of their borrowings.

Borrowing through credit cards, loans, overdrafts and mortgages has hit almost 1.4 trillion, according to comparison website uSwitch.com.

An estimated 9.5m people had "maxed out" on one form of credit during the past six months, while 38% have had a credit card application rejected, the group claims.

But nearly two-thirds of these failed to close down their existing credit facilities, and instead went on to rack up a further 2,300 of debt on average.

Overall, the research found that the average household has now amassed unsecured debts of 4,281.

Corrections and clarifications

An item Thursday in the Regional News Watch about a brawl at Bradley Technology and Trade High School incorrectly stated that the school's safety aides were away at training at the time. The Milwaukee police officers assigned to Bradley Tech as school resource officers were at training.

Because of an editing error, an article in some editions Thursday about potholes misspelled the surname of a Milwaukee alderman. His name is Jim Bohl, not Buhl.

An article Wednesday about proposed legislation seeking $900,000 in emergency funds to save 21 assistant district attorney positions across Wisconsin misstated the impact the additional funding would have on the state budget deficit. It would increase the deficit to about $401 million, not about $500 million.

Chicago as a 'Grey' area?

I come back there all the time," says Rhimes, a former resident of University Park and a 1987 graduate of Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights (also my alma mater; our time there overlapped for one year, but we didn't know each other.).

Chicago's loss was a gain for Seattle, where Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and four other interns are struggling through a grueling internship at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital.

Though the show has its soapy elements - Grey is in a tangled relationship with one of her superiors, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) - "Grey's Anatomy" is actually a refreshing oasis of intriguing, nuanced characters.

In particular, "Grey's" offers a compelling range of female characters in a TV season in which many of the women on hour-long dramas are lawyers, crime fighters of some kind or crime victims.

[NYSE: JPM], announced today that it has finalized the acquisition of Unicorn Financial Services, a leading patient financing company. The combined company officially launches its expanded set of patient financing products today as ChaseHealthAdvance financing options.

CfL helps Labour to campaign during elections, designing candidates' websites and software that allows them to send text messages directly to voters. Mid-Size SUVs: The Good And Bad When It Comes To Safety

The newest crash test study of mid-size SUVs has both good and bad news for those who drive these big rigs. And for some HUMMER owners, you have to be wondering if the "safe as a tank" perception some have of your ride is truly deserving.

The good news? The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's latest crash tests found 8 of 9 mid-size SUVs earned a "Good" rating in front end collisions. That's a big improvement from the Institutes last test in 2001 where only half the mid-size sport utes rated "Good."

The bad news? For the first time, the Institute tested side and rear-impact crash protection, and automakers have to make their sport utes perform better. Especially in rear-impact, where only 2 of 9 got a "Good" rating.

Victoria Election Poll Vault Weblog

The headline on The Sunday Age front page says it all: 'Contest? What contest?'

After a month of two very different campaigning styles - slow and steady on Steve Bracks's side and self-consciously quirky on Ted Baillieu's - Victorians are waking up today to a Parliament that remains relatively unchanged.

Victoria might have once been considered the jewel in the Liberals' crown but yesterday was Labor's second-biggest Victorian election win ever, after 2002.

The ALP is predicted to take 56 seats, with about 75 per cent of the votes counted.

The Liberals' performance follows expectations - they're tipped to pick up seven extra seats to take a total of 20 - but that might be sour grapes for a party that may now have to wait till 2014 for the chance of an election win.

Changes to Google AdWords URL policy to be enforced from April 1

Google has officially announced that from April 1 2008, it will be enforcing its AdWords URL policy more strictly. While this display URL policy is already in existence, a recent blog post on the official Google AdWords blog has publicised the fact that Google will no longer be allowing certain exceptions to their policy guidelines. Its enforcement policy will apply to all advertisers, regardless of past approvals and will include redirects and vanity URLs.While the enforcement will not affect all advertisers, it is an important development for advertisers to be aware of. Anyone who does not comply with the policy guidelines risks disruption to their ads and the possibility of future disapprovals.Google told Barry Schwartz at searchengineland that its goal is to "have policies that are fair, consistent, and adaptable".

Yahoo may consider an alliance with Google

Yahoo management is considering revisiting talks it held with Google several months ago on an alliance as an alternative to Microsoft's bid, that source said. At $31 a share, Yahoo believes the bid undervalues the company, two sources said. A second source close to Yahoo said it had received a procession of preliminary contacts by media, technology, telephone and financial companies. But the source said they were unaware whether any alternative bid was in the offing.

In a memo to Yahoo employees on Friday, Yahoo leaders wrote: “We want to emphasise that absolutely no decisions have been made — and, despite what some people have tried to suggest, there's certainly no integration process underway." Few natural bidders exist besides Google that could engage in a bidding war, and Google would be unlikely to win approval from antitrust regulators, some Wall Street analysts said on Friday.
