Marxist critic Eagleton faces axe at debt-hit university

July marks Professor Eagleton's normal contractual retirement date at 65 and discussions are continuing regarding his future role," he said.

Eagleton has made it clear he resents having to leave his post as John Edward Taylor professor of English literature. The thought of retiring to help pay the salary of his opponent rankles, and he told the Observer: "It is certainly profoundly odd that during this financial crisis they can afford to hire someone like him."

Eagleton has written that Amis is "with the beasts ... the Muslim-baiters and haters, these days as likely to come from the Groucho and Garrick clubs as the nasty secret venues used by the neo-fascists".

Amis is unlikely to attend Eagleton's farewell party, if it comes to that, after remarking that the critic had "submitted to an unworthy combination of venom and sloth", adding: "Can I ask him, in a collegial spirit, to shut up about it?"

Following a European directive, UK legislation has left it up to individual employers to set a mandatory retirement age for their workers, which has to be at least 65.

How Much Do You Need?

BUYING ENOUGH homeowners insurance should be a fairly straightforward matter of getting ample coverage to rebuild your house and replace its contents in the event of a total loss. You also want to protect yourself in case someone gets injured on your property and sues you for all you're worth. But how much is enough? That's not an easy question. Twenty minutes on the phone with a direct seller can yield a rough figure, based on your location, the size of your mortgage and the number of rooms in your house. But is that ballpark number really in the ballpark? To help you find a better answer, we've broken the process down into its components so you can better gauge your own needs. .

Mike Huckabee's 3:1 win over John McCain in Kansas this weekend sends a loud warning to the Arizona senator – and allows the glib Arkansan to justify remaining in the presidential race. As the sole remaining credible competitor to McCain in the primaries, Huckabee is likely to continue to win delegates, as the vessel through which disgruntled Republicans can send a message about their discontent with the party's likely nominee.

Speaking as he does of “miracles," Mike Huckabee must understand that it would require one for him to win the 2008 nomination – he would have to secure 93% of the remaining delegates. So clearly, he's remaining in the race for another reason. By raising his delegate count above Mitt Romney's, second only to McCain's, Huckabee may well hope that he is establishing himself as the putative frontrunner the next time a Republican presidential field assembles.

Herald fulfilled dream to be a doctor

Ninety-nine percent of your diagnoses are going to come from what the patient says," Herald said.

Hurt said many physicians may want to "toot their own horn" when it comes to their accomplishments, but Herald just isn't that way.

"He's a very humble man," Hurt said.

He recalled Herald from their days at the School of Osteopathic Medicine. He said Herald built computers, taught himself golf and built his own clubs. He said he's always had a knack for landscaping and gardening, too.

Herald said managing a job, a family and a wide host of hobbies requires some serious time management. The key to success is perspective, he said.

"You do have to balance it. There's going to be days that you're going to be getting home late," he said.

Pallinghurst may counter Palmary bid

EX-BHP Billiton boss Brian Gilbertson's Pallinghurst says it may yet raise its takeover bid for Perth-based manganese maker Consolidated Minerals to counter an increased offer from rival bidder Palmary.

Palmary, the bidding company for Ukrainian billionaire Gennadiy Bogolyubov, today raised its cash offer for ConsMin by 20c a share to $4.70 a share, putting pressure on Pallinghurst to raise its own $4.50 a share bid. Investors immediately punted on the chances of Pallinghurt raising is offer, bidding ConsMin (ASX: CSM: quote) shares up 20c, or 4 per cent, to $4.85, and valuing the miner at $1.1 billion. "We have seen Palmary's announcement and we reserve our right to increase our offer. At this point in time we have nothing further to add," Pallinghurst director Arne Frandsen told The Australian through a spokeswoman.

February 2008

After asking a national sample of more than 1,000 Americans how much they knew about global warming and how they felt about it, the researchers report that respondents who are better-informed about global warming “both feel less personally responsible for global warming, and also show less concern for global warming."

That surely explains why Laurie David is so hysterical. I've written before of the gap in perception on this issue between scientists and meteorologists (think Max Mayfield, formerly head of the National Hurricane Center and world renowned global warming skeptic). People who actually know something about weather and climate, but whose research and grant money don't depend on a deep and abiding faith in global warming, tend not to be too alarmist about changing weather.

Danish Court Tells ISP To Block PirateBay

I'm a Dane, and I can tell you that 90% of the population can choose between 3 or more ISP's. The problem is that the other ISP's tend to follow (don't ask me why) like they did with allofmp3.com and mp3sparks.com. You can say what you want about allofmp3, TPB and how useless a DNS block is, but it's a very slippery slope. This is pretty much as pure censorship as it gets (which is forbidden in the danish "Grundloven" just like in the US Constitution), and if it's allowed to continue there is no telling where it will end.

DALLAS, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- A year ago, the Chilean subsidiary of Banco Santander faced a challenge familiar to many financial institutions: the protection of their online customer base via strong authentication.
